A holistic approach to the management of hand problems is essential for optimal recovery and outcomes. Often this requires the involvement of a hand therapist (physiotherapist or occupational therapist specifically trained in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of hand and upper limb pain or dysfunction).
Post operative therapy helps patients recuperate and regain flexibility, strength and movement following surgery. Treatments include tailored exercise programs, joint and tendon mobilisation, scar management, oedema control, sensory re-education, desensitisation and splinting or casting.
A range of non-surgical treatments are also provided by hand therapists to help reduce pain, regain movement, build flexibility and restore strength.
Dr Tolerton works closely with a number of leading hand therapists in Sydney. Depending on your diagnosis or injury, a referral and appointment for hand therapy will be organised by Dr Tolerton and her team if required. This can be arranged to suit your home or workplace location and schedule.
